Healthy Aging Month

September is National Healthy Aging Month, which is a time to show the positive side of growing older. There are currently more than 50 million people 65 years and older in the United States. That is a large part of the population that tends to be overlooked due to their age.

Healthy Aging Month sets out to change the stigma that life stops being enjoyable after a certain age. According to Carolyn Worthington, editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging® Magazine and executive director of Healthy Aging®, the month is to be used to educate and provide ideas to seniors on how to improve their physical, mental, social and financial well-being.

At Century Park, we see firsthand how life does not stop as you get older. We believe the fun is just getting started. We are dedicated to creating an enriching lifestyle for our residents at all of our communities.

One way we focus on healthy aging is by bringing in local experts to provide educational presentations on a variety of topics. Before COVID-19, professionals from the community would come to speak on a topic that would be relevant and engaging to the residents. There have been a wide range of areas touched on, such as gardening tips and tricks, retaining muscle mass, chiropractic and cardiology health, aging with animals, how hearing affects the brain and many more. Residents can always find a subject that is appropriate to their lifestyle. Our communities love being able to provide these kinds of services, and the residents take away much from the presentations that they can apply to their lives.

However, things have changed since the global pandemic. Visitor restrictions have been put in place at all of our community buildings, which means experts have not been allowed inside to do these seminars. Right now is a crucial time to educate seniors about healthy lifestyle factors. Because of this, many of our communities have gone virtual with their presentations. They will either play a pre-recorded video presentation or have a Zoom call with the expert so the residents can interact.

“Seniors have found it difficult to continue their daily routines as they normally did. With this disruption, it is our duty to do everything we can to assist them in their time of need. One way we can do this is by keeping them informed with virtual presentations,” said Lauren Boothe, community relations assistant at Pointe Frontier Retirement Community in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Our number one priority is our residents’ health and care. We strive to make their lives as normal as possible during this time, and these presentations are just one way of doing that. We hope you will take this month to reflect and learn about how to age healthfully and gracefully.
